Mentorship & Preceptorship Programs

The ASLMS Mentorship Program (AMP) connects residents and early career members with senior society members to collaborate on a specific project over one year and establish relationships. Projects may be chosen from a list of board-directed initiatives or created by the mentee, and should benefit the ASLMS membership in some way. The program is virtual and adapts to the mentor and mentee’s schedules. All ASLMS members that play a role in lasers and energy-based devices are welcome to participate — all positions and specialties.

Attach your curriculum vitae

Include a current curriculum vitae with your application.

Write your essay

An essay (1,000 words or less) outlining career goals, educational goals, and how the mentorship program will impact your future or current practice of using lasers and other related technologies in medical and surgical applications.

Sign the release forms

Include the signed and dated Mentee Release Form and Mentor Release Form.

Program Details

Participation Requirements

ASLMS members early in their careers, new to lasers, lights, and energy-based device practice, or students (resident, fellow, post-doctorate) work with established ASLMS members to complete recommended or personally selected projects. Projects must relate to ASLMS' mission and vision. Student and non-student applicants must hold ASLMS membership.

Approval Process

The ASLMS Early Career Mentorship Committee makes final application approval decisions. Mentee applicants are evaluated on merit regarding career and educational goals, and project impact on future or current laser and energy-based technology practice.

Project Structure

Applicants choose projects from the ASLMS-provided list or submit personal choices. ASLMS may assign mentors or applicants may coordinate independently. Participation depends on mentor availability. Each mentor-mentee pair coordinates project duration. No funding is available.

Post-Project Mentee Requirements

Upon completion, mentees submit: project results coordinated with the mentor; a timesheet and evaluation using ASLMS forms; a brief report of 1,000 words or less outlining the experience via email to information@aslms.org; and a high-resolution (300 dpi or greater) color photograph/headshot.
